How to Spot a Rental Scam in Gurgaon

Almost every rental scam in Gurgaon ends the same way: you are asked to transfer a token amount before seeing the place. The stories vary — the owner is travelling, another tenant is interested, the price is only held until evening — but the request is identical, and it is the single reliable signal you need.

Why does the scam always involve paying before a visit?

Because that is the only step where the scammer gets anything. There is no flat, no keys and no meeting, so the entire fraud has to be compressed into one transfer made under time pressure. Everything before it — the photographs, the friendly messages, the plausible reason for being unavailable — exists to make that single moment feel reasonable.

This is why "never pay before you visit" works as an absolute rule rather than a judgement call. You do not have to assess whether a particular story is true. You only have to notice that you are being asked to pay for something you have not seen.

What are the warning signs?

Rent noticeably below what similar places in the same area go for. Scam listings are priced to attract urgency, not to be believable to someone who has been looking for a while.

The owner cannot meet and cannot send anyone in their place. Genuine owners who are travelling have a caretaker, a relative, a broker or a current tenant who can open the door.

Pressure to decide immediately, usually involving another interested party who will take it tonight.

A refusal to do a live video call showing the flat and the street outside. A recorded walkthrough proves nothing; anyone can forward a video.

Photographs that look like a catalogue. Reverse image search them — stolen listing photos are common and take seconds to check.

A request to pay to a personal UPI ID or account belonging to someone whose name does not match the person you have been speaking to.

Contact that moves off-platform immediately and then pushes hard for payment.

What should you verify before paying anything?

See the place in person, in daylight. If you genuinely cannot, send someone you trust — not someone the other party suggests.

Confirm the person letting the flat has the right to. For an owner, that means ownership documents. For a departing tenant subletting a room, it means the landlord knows and agrees, in writing. A sublet the owner has not approved can be ended without notice, and the deposit disappears with it.

Get the rent, the deposit, the maintenance charge, the notice period and the deposit-return timeline written down before any money moves. Verbal agreement on the deposit is where most non-fraud disputes start too.

Pay in a traceable way and keep the record. A bank transfer with a reference beats cash, and beats a UPI transfer to an unidentified handle.

What if you have already paid?

Act quickly and stop paying anything further, including any request framed as a refund-processing fee — that is a second stage of the same scam.

Report it to your bank immediately; recovery is occasionally possible if the transfer is very recent.

File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) and at your local police station. Keep every message, screenshot and transaction reference.

Report the listing wherever you found it, so the same profile cannot keep operating.

Common questions

Is it normal to pay a token amount to hold a room in Gurgaon?

It happens in genuine transactions, but only after you have seen the place and met the person letting it. Being asked for a token before any visit is not a normal step — it is the defining feature of the most common rental scam.

How can I check whether listing photos are stolen?

Run a reverse image search on them. Scam listings frequently reuse photographs from other portals or from properties in entirely different cities, and this takes under a minute to check.

Is subletting a room risky if the landlord does not know?

Yes. If the owner has not agreed to the sublet, your arrangement has no standing with them and can be ended without notice, usually taking your deposit with it. Ask to see the primary agreement and confirm that subletting is permitted.

Where do I report a rental scam in India?

The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in handles online financial fraud, and you should also file locally at the police station. Report to your bank first, because timing affects whether anything can be recovered.

General information, not legal advice. For a dispute involving significant money, speak to a lawyer.
